Having a disease or illness is often difficult for both the individual and their loved ones. It can often affect the lives of both the caregiver and the person affected with it, which is why we often have to learn how to deal with it properly, especially if we are planning to care for them ourselves.
Caring for someone with Parkinson’s Disease is even more challenging: you have to learn how to give them the best care like that of a senior home care in San Diego. There are also home modifications that you have to follow based on your loved one’s special needs regarding their physical and cognitive difficulties.
Most people who have Parkinson’s Disease need a wheelchair to be able to move around. Make sure to have your furniture far apart from each other, so they have space to move around. 5 1/2 feet is the ideal space between each furniture, as most experts suggest.
The Floor Rugs
Floor rugs can often lead to trips and falls for someone who has the disease. Get rid of thick floor rugs and replace them with thinner ones to avoid sudden trips. If you can, get rid of the floor rugs entirely and make sure that the flooring is often cleaned with non-skid floor wax.
Table and standing lamps should be properly placed somewhere it cannot be tipped over. Place them in corners and avoid putting them on tables, as these can easily fall when bumped by a wheelchair. You should also make sure that the lamp switch can be easily accessed to avoid any frustration from the person with the disease. Cords should also be easily used without any discomfort.
The Home Decorations
As we have mentioned earlier, lamps can easily tip off when bumped over, especially when it is placed on top of a table. You should also avoid putting things such as vases and statuary objects on top of a table or somewhere they can easily fall off. Clear the main walkway and avoid placing unnecessary objects near the path.
Living with someone who has Parkinson’s Disease can be challenging, but is doable. You just have to learn how to do it correctly and if you need it, you should enlist the help of a professional.
